Why do you like linen sheets?

I'm curious to know why others are drawn to things made from linen, especially linen sheets as they are the most tactile way of experiencing linen. There seems to be two camps: Those who, without question, want linen sheets, linen napkins, linen towels, etc. and need only to decide on colors, styles, and their budget. Then there are others, perhaps less knowledgeable or particular about fabrics, who never thought of sleeping on linen sheets and probably need to try it before they will commit.

To me, linen feels supremely natural, like spreading out on cool dry grass in the summer to watch the clouds roll by. Spreading freshly laundered linen sheets out on the bed is like laying down an oasis of goodness from the earth. I love sleeping on linen sheets because they always feel cool and dry. The weight and tensile flutter of the linen has a substantial feeling of quality.

Today I received a message from a woman interested in linen sheets. She was interested in rougher, heavier feeling linen. She said the rough heavy linen reminds her of family heirlooms and things passed down from one generation to the next. She specifically didn't want the linen to be too soft. From my experience, all linen becomes soft with time and additional washing, nonetheless, her request got me thinking about why others enjoy linen. Please feel free to leave a message and join the conversation.

  1. Hi Jason,

I like *your* linen sheets because the fabric is delicious, the sewing is beautiful, the customer service is outstanding, and the price is very reasonable.

I like linen sheets in general because they feel cool and have a nice drape.

    Best regards,
    Leila

  3. I lke your linen sheets because they feel cooler than my cotton sheets and feel softer also. I can't wait to get in bed at night.
    They are worth every penny.

  5. What do you suggest in summer? a cotton bed or linen bed? Do linen has any identification like 300 thread?

There is nothing that compares with sleeping on linen in the summertime. The fabric is crisp and has its own weight and body so it drapes instead of adhering to your body. It is cool but still covers comfortably. It feels pure.

  7. From the moment I bought my first antique French linen sheet after curiosity got the best of me, I've been hooked. Unfortunately that sheet started developing holes after the second wash, but I soon after discovered Linoto. Linen is a completely different experience from cotton. In the beginning new linen will give your body a serious exfoliation treatment every time you roll over (ha!), but after just a couple of washes it begins to develop a lovely sheen and becomes as soft as chamois. It never sticks, rather seems to gently float upon you which is a godsend in summer. As a bottom sheet it is supremely absorbent, always dry and cool. Good quality linen last a long time with care, and only gets better...

  8. I've been between my Linoto sheets in Indigo for a month now with weekly washing and delicate drying in the dryer, then straight onto the bed when still slightly damp. It is simple and it works. There is a learning curve with Linen. I love silky Modal, crisp Percale and soft Sateen. I had to adjust to the idea that Linen offered a different experience; soft but textured. At first I wasn't sure, the fabric seemed course and rough in comparison, but the sheets are softening with each wash and I am learning to appreciate what others know, that the tactile experience and substantial comfortable weight of Linen is a delight.

  9. Nothing to add that hasn't already been said here. It's mostly the cool comfort in Summer and sensuous drape of linen that seduces me. It's marvelous!

  10. I've found that linen sheets are useful all year round - both as an additional layer on top of the bedclothes in winter, and as the sole layer on those hot summer nights.
Of course, for the best sleep possible, you need to make sure you've got the best of everything: the right temperature in your room, the long stretch of time in which to enjoy your sleep (rather than catching a quick nap), and even the mattress.
